Although I don’t consider myself a real fan of RTS strategy games – I play everything I find fun – I love the Total War series. In case you didn’t know, the Total War series’ draw point is its highly strategic, large-scale battles that often involve thousands of units fighting on-screen, conceivably over 5000 (at which my computer slows down and starts breaking). I’ve played all the games in the series save Shogun, and my gaming time as of late has been filled by the latest installment Medieval 2.

I’ve only played around 40% of the “Grand Campaign” mode so far (about 100 turns), but my favorite part has to be the Mongol invasion where on Very Hard (not sure about the other difficulties) they drop a dozen mid-high experience, huge armies on Baghdad and advance westward.

I was unlucky enough to be in control of the region at the time and lost several armies to the superior Mongol troops – even their raffle infantry were kicking my elite Templar Knights left and right – I was eventually able to start turning the tables on them by drawing them into battles where I had extreme advantages and drawing my reinforcements from Europe. A messy ordeal, but fun enough that I decided to start over and try to utterly contain their invasion within Baghdad.

In any case this is a boring post, but I highly recommend this game to anyone who has room in their imagination for massive, epic battles in the Middle Ages. If you have a penchant for the strategic, then even better, as then you can lead your armies across Europe from the West or the East.
